The Importance of Battery Safety and the Safety Advantages of Dabbsson Portable Power Station
A recent article on Yacht.de, titled “Fire Alert: Ship Fires Caused By Batteries'' has drawn widespread attention. This incident occurred on Lake Constance and again highlights the potential risks associated with battery use. However, it’s worth noting that the Dabbsson Portable Power Station featured in the images did not cause the fire and was not damaged in the event - as they note in the article, “The power station in the picture is actually not the cause of the fire and was on board to power devices such as smartphones and tablets.” We extend our sympathies to those involved in the fire and wish them a speedy recovery.
It’s known that, occasionally, lithium batteries can explode or cause fires. Recent articles on the web have rightly drawn attention to this issue. They explore the potential of fires caused by batteries whilst outdoors or in densely populated cities - an understandably concerning issue for consumers.
But it’s important to remember that it’s still rare for batteries to cause fires. Safety features are built-in to minimize the risk of danger to you and your device. While fires are dangerous, there are simple steps you can take to prevent them occuring. This includes maintaining your battery and keeping it in optimum conditions to prevent damage and to extend its life.
At Dabbsson, we put the safety of our customers first. Our portable power station, solar panels and all other devices we make are designed for safely. In this blog, we’ll explore the importance of battery safety and the safety features of your Dabbsson portable power station.
The Importance of Battery Safety
The increase in smartphone and other electrical device use, as well as a cultural shift towards sustainable energy, has meant that batteries are an indispensable energy source in the modern world. As more and more people use them in outdoor activities, such as camping and sailing, many batteries are being purchased and kept in potentially extreme conditions.
It’s important to remember that as an electrical storage device, batteries need to be maintained and used correctly. Incorrect use can lead to serious safety issues such as fires and explosions - which is why unconnected batteries must be carried in hand luggage rather than checked baggage on an airplane.
There are some key battery safety considerations you should take when using your battery in an outdoor adventure or activity. By considering these, you can reduce the risk of any explosions or fires while maintaining the life of the portable power station.
1. Risk of Overcharging and Over-Discharging
One of the key reasons batteries can set on fire is because there’s a risk of overcharging (when you charge a battery too much), or over discharging (when the cell is discharged beyond the lower safety limit).
Overcharging is dangerous because it can cause your battery to overheat, leading to a thermal reaction that causes internal components to break down. In turn, this generates more heat - which can lead to fires. On the other hand, over-discharging can cause a battery's voltage to drop and become unstable - which can also lead to thermal issues and potential fires. Because of this, charging or discharging the battery beyond the standard limits may result in degraded battery performance or even cause a fire.
Modern batteries incorporate protective measures to monitor and control these processes - you can learn more about how Dabbsson does this below. However, it’s wise to be aware of your batteries' charging limits, information that will likely be found online or in the safety manual.
2. Battery Damage and Leakage
Physical damage can harm batteries, causing them to leak. In turn, this substance may be flammable and set on fire. It may seem obvious, but it’s worth mentioning that these leaks contain harmful substances, which cause harm to the environment and your health. You should take safety precautions like wearing gloves when handling a leaking battery.
There are two common causes of battery leakage: short-circuiting and battery aging. The second factor is the natural corrosion of the battery parts, including the casing and seals, which happens more quickly with low-quality materials.
You can prevent battery damage and leakage by adding protective cases to your batteries, storing them in safe, cool and dry places, and regularly inspecting them for damage. If your battery leaks or appears damaged, it should be disposed of appropriately.
3. Nail Penetration Test
One of the ways that batteries are tested against damage and leakage is the nail penetration test. This is when a nail is inserted into a battery that is charged to 100%, which stimulates a short-circuit in the battery and external damage.
We are proud that Dabbsson’s EV Semi-solid state LFP battery easily passed this test, exceeding the results of a normal LFP battery. Our battery did not explode and no fire or smoke was detected during this test.
4. Battery Overheating
While internal processes and malfunctions can cause fires or explosions, excessive use of batteries in high-temperature environments may also cause overheating. Batteries are sensitive and their performance can be affected by overheating in general - if you own an iPhone, you might have experienced being unable to use it when it overheats.
High-quality batteries, like the Dabbsson DBS2300 Portable Power Station, are designed to be fireproof with a UL94 V0-rated casing (more information below). This makes them ideal for outdoor adventures with the potential for extreme heat.
If your battery feels too hot, stop using it and move it to a cool area out of direct sunlight to give it time to cool down. Make sure that you monitor it.
5. Low-Quality Battery Risk
Using inferior or uncertified batteries may present higher safety risks, including battery short-circuiting or overheating.
As we mentioned, buying a low-quality battery often leads to higher safety risks. The materials are less durable and therefore can be susceptible to corrosion, short-circuiting and overheating. Your batteries should also be certified and follow FCC 15 rules (limits on the amount of electromagnetic interference allowed from digital and electronic devices). Plus, it’s a good rule to replace them as they reach the end of their life.
Security Benefits of the Dabbsson Portable Power Station
Despite the potential risks associated with battery use, you can rely on the Dabbsson Portable Power Station for safety. That’s because we’ve created a safety-focused power solution with a range of safety features that ensure user safety and reliable power supply to devices:

Plus, we have created a smart app to assist you to monitor the battery’s status and provide an early warning about potential issues.
Conclusion
Batteries and portable power stations need to be handled with consideration and care. There have been instances of them causing fires and explosions - hence safety measures being taken on planes and in safety manuals provided with the devices, to make sure that you are as safe as possible.
The recent article on Yacht.de highlights these potential risks. However, the battery industry has listened to these concerns. At Dabbsson, we have harnessed our team's combined talent and experience in technological innovation and manufacturing to create portable power stations that are reliable with excellent safety performance. An Essential Guide for Handling the Hurricane Season
This blog explores a tough topic - how to prepare for hurricane season - and references the dangers of hurricanes. If you’re only interested in learning what size portable power station you need in your hurricane kit, and, for instance, if there’s a portable power station for a CPAP machine , you should skip to the latter part of the blog or head to our website.
Each year, the South Eastern Seaboard and Gulf of Mexico have the potential to experience hurricanes. These unyielding forces of nature are destructive, dangerous, and potentially devastating.
These huge storms are characterized by strong winds, heavy rainfall, and - what can be the most dangerous element - storm surges.
As the National Hurricane Center notes, “the official hurricane season for the Atlantic basin is from June 1 to November 30.” So we’re in the midst of potentially dangerous weather - and if a hurricane doesn’t come this year, there’s the potential for it to happen in the future.
It’s necessary to be prepared. Read on to learn more about hurricanes and storm surges, as well as how to prepare a hurricane kit (and what size portable power station you need for your kit).
How Do Hurricanes Form?
To properly prepare yourself and be able to respond to the threat of hurricanes, you need to understand how they form and build to an incredible 74+ mph wind speed.
Hurricanes are tropical cyclones that form over tropical waters where the ocean is over 80°F (27°C). This means they usually form in late summer and early fall. In short, evaporated water rises over the ocean, cools, and forms clouds, which then begin to spin around a central point due to winds. It will usually weaken once it reaches land and isn’t fed by moisture and wind.
Want to learn more? View this great YouTube video by NOAA SciJinks explaining how hurricanes form.
Several factors feed into the creation of a hurricane:
Warm ocean water + moisture: This is why hurricanes form in the Gulf of Mexico! The warm water evaporates and hurricanes thrive on the moisture-laden air as it rises and cools, releasing latent heat and causing the storm to intensify. This can also be intensified by winds from the direction of Africa, which can cause more water to evaporate.
Low-pressure system: Hurricanes need a low-pressure system to form. This can be triggered by changes in atmospheric pressure caused by tropical waves or weather patterns.
Coriolis Effect: The Earth's rotation helps to spin the developing storm, causing it to rotate and potentially evolve into a hurricane.
Hurricanes go through different stages as they increase in intensity, from a tropical depression to a storm, before becoming a Category 1 hurricane (the weakest kind). There are 5 categories of hurricanes in total.
What is a Storm Surge?
One of the most dangerous elements of a hurricane is the storm surge. This occurs when the hurricane's strong winds and low-pressure systems cause a rapid rise in the sea level along the coast. Severe flooding can occur because the tide is higher than expected.
Storm surges can have devastating consequences. As the National Hurricane Center notes, over 1,500 people sadly lost their lives in 2005 either directly or indirectly because of the storm surge of Hurricane Katrina.
Storm Surge Potential Flood Area
As a resident somewhere likely to be hit by hurricanes, you must understand the storm surge potential flood area. Low-lying coastal regions, barrier islands and anywhere likely to be in the path of a hurricane are all more likely to experience severe storm surges.
In the US, cities like New Orleans, Louisiana and Miami, Florida are susceptible to flooding, as well as Houston, Texas. It’s important to have a robust evacuation plan and have a hurricane kit ready if you live in these areas (and those detailed below).
What are the top 5 States Expecting Hurricanes - and when?
While several states can experience hurricanes each year, some are more prone to experiencing natural disasters.
The top 5 states that are likely to experience hurricanes are:
Florida, which has an extensive coastline. Cities such as Miami, Tampa and Jacksonville can be strongly affected by hurricanes.
Texas, which lies along the Gulf of Mexico. Houston and Corpus Christi are likely to experience hurricanes - although Texas’ vast size means many cities can be affected.
Louisiana has cities like New Orleans that lie below sea level and therefore are at risk. Hurricanes that make landfall in the Gulf of Mexico often affect here.
North Carolina, where coastal regions including the Outer Banks can be severely affected by flooding.
South Carolina, where cities such as Charleston and Myrtle Beach have hurricane threats.
For all of these areas, hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with a peak in mid-September.
How to Prepare Your Hurricane Kit
A hurricane kit is a collection of essential items you will need during a hurricane and any emergency that might result because of one. This will help you and your family to stay safe and healthy during the storm until it passes or further help comes.
Typical elements of a hurricane kit include:
Non-perishable food. It’s vital you stock up on canned goods (with a means of opening them) as well as items like dried fruit and nuts. You should aim to have enough food to last you and everyone in your household at least 3 days - and longer, if you have the space.
Water. Check to make sure that you have water for everyone in your household, again for at least 3 days. This should be in addition to any other drinks you might be stockpiling.
First aid kit. You don’t know what might happen amid strong winds and heavy rain, so keeping a first aid kit handy is incredibly important. This is your regular reminder to make sure to check any medicines or goods in the kit haven’t expired!
Sanitation and hygiene Items. Bars of soap, toilet paper, and supplies to keep your place sanitized are important.
Cash and important documents. Keep your identity documents safe and easily accessible, as well as a non-digital form of cash.
Sources of warmth. Whether that’s clothes, a sleeping bag, or a foil blanket, make sure you can stay warm.
Emergency tools. This includes a whistle (to call for help) as well as pliers or any other tool that can help you turn off utilities.
Backup power station. It’s important to have a reliable source of electricity that isn’t attached to the grid, so you can keep your phone charged and make sure you stay safe and comfortable (for instance, if you need to power a CPAP machine through the night).
What Size Portable Power Station Do I Need for Emergency Use?
To know the answer to this, you need to list the electricals that are important to keep going during a hurricane. For instance, you’ll need to keep your mobiles powered and potentially a radio to keep up to date with governmental news and evacuation warnings.
You might also need items like medical equipment and/or CPAP machines to sleep through the night. If this is the case, you need to make sure your portable power station can power the goods.
The safest way to do this is to get a portable power station that has expandable batteries. Then you can get hours of juice stored that will be able to keep your devices powered when you need them.
Dabbsson DBS2300 Plus + DBS3000B
The Dabbsson DBS2300 Plus and DBS3000B are impressive pieces to add to your kit. The DBS2300 Plus has a 2300Wh capacity (expandable up to 8330Wh with 2 of the DBS3000B) and gives a 2200W AC output (expandable to 4000W). One of the biggest expandable battery packs on the market, this expanded size can give you up to 6 days of power.
This means you can charge your phone up to 175 times and a smaller electrical device (like a 60W portable refrigerator) for 35 hours. It’s a brilliant addition to your hurricane kit.
Conclusion
If your home is potentially in the path of hurricanes, it’s important to make sure that you are prepared for every eventuality. A hurricane kit is necessary to keep you fed, watered and warm during the storm. And a key component is a portable power station to keep your vital electrical goods powered.
But what size portable power station do you need in your hurricane kit? We recommend at least 2300Wh capacity - but what’s more important is that it should have an expandable battery. That way you can work out the capacity of the portable power station you need to power your critical electricals, like a CPAP machine, and make sure you have enough electricity stored.

Be mindful of generator safety
Purchasing a new solar generator is the first part of the process. However, you must know how to operate it properly, especially during emergencies. Here are a few steps you should always consider during operation:
Install all solar panels correctly
Ensure your solar panels are connected to your control system, which will channel electricity to the generator battery. The inverter will then convert the DC power to AC, afterward, fueling your appliances, devices, and more. If not properly connected, this process will be stalled, something that’s not desired when power outages occur.
Turn off the main circuit breaker
Doing this will prevent electricity from flowing from your home to local power grids and thus keep utility workers out of harm’s way when trying to restore power. After turning off the main circuit breaker, you can connect your solar panels and turn on your inverter.
Prioritize energy use wisely
You never want to exceed the capacity of your solar panels or lower your generator battery too quickly. Avoiding this means keeping a close eye on your energy consumption and making adjustments where you see fit. The duration of power outages is usually unpredictable, so monitor energy usage wisely to ensure you have the power you need for as long as you need it.

For example, you should make sure that you know where the nearest evacuation center is to you and know your route for getting there. That way, you won’t have to worry about planning a route or having to look up your destination when disaster strikes.
Know how you’ll receive information
You also want to make sure that you have a surefire way to receive important updates in the event of a natural disaster. This might include purchasing a weather radio so that you can hear news about the disaster, even if TV stations and the internet in your area go out.
Likewise, make sure you have a good way to stay in touch with family members. That could mean creating contact cards so that you don’t have to remember everyone’s number.
It could also be a good idea to come up with a meeting place for your family. That way, if anyone gets separated during the weather event and can’t contact you, you’ll all know where you’re supposed to meet.
Know how you’ll evacuate pets
If you have pets, you should also develop a plan for getting them to a safe location in the event of a natural disaster. Be sure to have a carrier for them and enough of their medication to last for at least a week.
Practice makes perfect
Finally, it’s a good idea to practice the natural disaster plan you create. Take a few drives to your local evacuation center so that you know the route well. And ask the children in your family to practice putting together their bags quickly.
If you’ve already done these things before a natural disaster strikes, then you’re much likelier to follow the plan correctly when the real thing occurs.
Step 3: Prepare your home and vehicle for disaster
The next step in your natural disaster preparedness plan is getting your home and vehicle ready for whatever weather or climate event could occur in your area.
Here’s a look at how to do that:
Home natural disaster preparation
One of the most critical parts of getting your home ready for a natural disaster is making sure that you have a reliable backup power source. That way, if the power goes out, you can still charge your electronics, use lights and some of your appliances.
Dabbsson’s portable power stations are perfect for this. You can charge them up with a standard wall outlet, portable solar panels, or even your car’s cigarette lighter. And once you do, you’ll have enough power to use things like electric stoves, coffee makers, and even televisions.
When getting your home ready for a natural disaster, it’s also important to seal your doors and windows with weatherproofing material. Doing this could be the difference between keeping your home warm enough to remain in throughout a natural disaster or having to evacuate.
Other ideas for preparing your home for a natural disaster include:
Securing your outdoor furniture
Placing sandbags where water might leak in
Finding your utility lines
Leaving your water faucets open slightly to protect pipes from freezing
Vehicle natural disaster preparation
You also want to ensure that your vehicle is prepared to take you where you need to go if a natural disaster strikes. That’s why it’s a good idea to take your car to the shop at the beginning of natural disaster season.
A mechanic can top up your fluids, take a look at your engine, and offer suggestions for repairs and maintenance to ensure that your car is ready to transport you in harsh weather conditions.
If you live in areas with severe winter storms, it can also be a smart move to put things like blankets, road flares, and sleeping bags in your car. That way, your health isn’t at risk if your car breaks down in the snow.
Step 4: Put together a natural disaster survival kit
Building a natural disaster survival kit is one of the best things that you can do to get yourself and your family ready for severe weather.
Here’s what yours should have in it, according to the United States government::
At least a 3-day supply of non-perishable food
One gallon of water per person for several days
Flashlights
First aid kits
Extra batteries
Moist toilettes, garbage bags, and plastic ties (for personal sanitation needs)
Enough pet food to last for several days
Your natural disaster survival kit could need additional items as well. Think about what your family needs on an average day and how a loss of power or an inability to go to the store could impact that. Then, make sure that you add anything your family needs to get by in those situations to your kit.
Step 5: Pay close attention to local media
When a natural disaster strikes, it’ll be crucial for you and your family to stay connected to the local media. This is how you’ll get the information you need to determine what the best path forward is for you all.
For example, you could hear on the news that the natural disaster is slowing down. That could be a signal that you’re able to stay in your home.
Or, you could hear that something like a flood or even more severe weather is on the way. That could be your signal that it’s time to evacuate.
So, make sure that you understand which local media sources will be your source for information during a natural disaster. And make sure that you can still connect with those sources of information even if the power goes out.
Dabbsson can help you get natural disaster ready
Making sure that you survive the natural disasters in your area is all about being prepared. And a big part of that is ensuring that your family can access the electronic devices needed to stay connected, safe, and comfortable during severe weather events.
Dabbsson’s line of portable power stations makes this much easier for you to do. They’re a simple, safe way to continue accessing your most important electronic devices no matter what mother nature throws at you.

What is shore power and why is it important?
I. What is Shore Power?II. Will Shore Power Charge an 12V RV Battery?III. Do I Need to Disconnect My RV Battery When Connected to Shore Power?IV. Final Thoughts
RV shore power enables you to operate your recreational vehicle while it's parked. In this article, we'll delve into what shore power is, its functionality, whether it can charge your 12V battery, and if we can recreate it with a portable power station. Let's dive in!What is Shore Power?Shore power provides an alternative means of supplying power to essential functions of a ship, RV, or other heavy-duty vehicle without the need to run the engine. It's used when the vehicle is stationary and can connect to an external power source. This source, commonly called a 'power pedestal,' delivers AC electricity to the vehicle. For RVs and similar vehicles, the system typically operates on either a 30 amp or 50 amp setup.
Shore power offers great convenience for RV owners. However, depending on travel plan and campsite, you might need to pay for the electricity you use or manage without electricity at all. This is why you should always keep a alternative power source like portable generator or Dabbsson solar generator. Solar generator provide off-grid electricity storage and generation, and can be charged through various methods, including AC electrical outlets, generators, and solar panels.
Solar panels are one of the best option to charge your batteries on the road. By installing solar panels on the roof of RVs or bring portable solar panel with you on the road, you can charge with free energy wherever you go as long as there is sunlight to make sure that you can always have a dependable power source.
Will Shore Power Charge an 12V RV Battery? The 12V RV Battery is responsible for powering small appliances on your RV like lights, fans, water pump and refrigerator. You can use these appliances on the road and without plugging into shore power. Despite the 12V RV Battery use DC power, your RV has a built-in AC to DC inverter that will charge your 12V battery while plugged in shore power.
Do I Need to Disconnect My RV Battery When Connected to Shore Power? When plugged into shore power, you should keep your battery connected. This ensures that your DC-dependent devices, which draw power from the 12V batteries, will be continuously topped up by the incoming AC electricity via the converter.
The exception is during long-term storage. In such cases, if your converter cannot detect the battery's charge and reduce it to a trickle charge, it may overcharge the battery over time. This issue primarily affects older recreational vehicles during extended periods of storage.
Final ThoughtsShore power offers a quick and convenient solution, utilizing AC electrical plugs to directly power your AC-dependent appliances or charge your 12V DC battery, which in turn powers your DC-dependent devices.
But it does have its downfall: you'll need to plan your travels carefully to ensure you always stop at a campsite with shore power available. If you are planning to head deep into the wild, a backup power option like the DBS3500 or 2×DBS2300 Plus can be extremely helpful. With 3430Wh capacity, 3600W output, and a TT-30 plug for 30A RVs, it can power your RV directly like shore power and charge with up to 2400W of solar panels, ensuring you can always replenish your power source while on the road.

VI. Final Thoughts
A generator can be an ideal power source in travel, providing the necessary power for all your devices and activities wherever you go. However, replicating the comfort and convenience of stationary life can be challenging in an RV, particularly regarding electricity.
Whether you're an experienced RVer or preparing for your first trip, understanding your power supply is essential to maximizing your RV lifestyle. Discover more about the electrical requirements of RV use to find the best generator size for your 30 Amp RV.
Break Down the RV Power System
To choose the right generator for your 30 Amp RV, you need a solid understanding of electricity and the specifics of the RV electrical system. We'll break down the essential parts like voltage, wattage, and current, along with other important information so that you can have a better understanding of RV power system.
Voltage of RV
Voltage is the force that drives electric charges through a wire from one device to another. In RVs, most have 2 standard voltage system. One is a 12-volt system, which powers smaller items like lights and water pumps. Larger devices, such as appliances and outlets, require a higher voltage, typically 120V, which you can access by connecting the RV to shore power at a campsite.
Watts of RV
Wattage measures electrical power and is crucial for determining which appliances can run off your RV's electrical system. It indicates the amount of work needed to power devices like refrigerators, televisions, and AC. Each device has its own wattage requirements, ranging from just a few watts to several thousand watts.
Current of RV
Current is the flow of electricity, indicating how fast it moves through a system. Your RV’s electrical system capacity is measured in amps. A 30 Amp RV can handle up to 30 amps without overloading and won't allow electricity to pass at a rate slower than 30 amps.
To make things clear, a single formula connect these three aspects together: Watts = Volts×Amps. So a 30 Amps RV’s maximum watts should be 3600W = 120V × 30A.
Generator on RV
While RV can use shore power for 120V power, it may be difficult to find a campsite with shore power in some area. And if you want to venture into a more remote area, you could find yourself camping in area without campsite at all. In this case a solar generator like DBS3500 can provide 120V, 30A power just like the shore power to make sure you’ll always have power supply even in the wild.
Use at Campsite
A generator enables you to choose more remote campsites that might not have electrical hookups. Portable generator options can even be taken with you on adventures if you leave your RV behind to camp in the wilderness for a few days.
Multiple Charging Methods
A solar generator can be charged with multiple ways. From the standard wall outlet, shore power to solar panels. Being able to resupply your power source is crucial to your journey and DBS3500 can be charged with up to 2400W solar panels in just 2 hours granting you a renewable energy wherever you go.
Expandable Capacity
Solar generators like DBS3500 have the option to expend the capacity to fit more situations. With up to one main unit and four battery packs, DBS3500 can expand to 28kWh enough to run your RV for weeks.
Quiet and Pollution Free
Solar generators are designed to run quietly and without the need of gasoline. Whether you are running it on campsite or on your RV, a solar generator provide a quiet and peaceful environment. Your RV crew/family and your campsite neighbors will surely appreciate it.
Choosing the Right Solar Generator for a 30 Amp RV
A solar generator for a 30 Amp RV should have at least 3600W of rated power to meet the RV's wattage needs, as calculated earlier. In this case, the DBS3500 seems to be the perfect solution, as it has a 3600W output and a NEMA TT-30 port similar to a regular shore power port.
Moreover, the DBS3500 can be paired with 400W Solar Panel like the DBS420S to provide continuous power throughout your journey. With an expandable capacity of up to 28kWh, it will meet all the essential power needs of your RV.
FAQ
How many Watts does a 30A RV use?
By using the formula, we can calculate the watts of a 30A RV by multiplying the standard voltage of shore power, which is 120V, by 30A, resulting in 3600 watts. Therefore, the best generator for this RV should have a continuous output of 3600W.Can I use solar generator with less than 3600W for 30A RV?
With the right adapter, you can also plug in another solar generator, such as the DBS2300 Plus, to your RV. However, since the output of the DBS2300 Plus is 2200W instead of 3600W, you may need to use smaller appliances and avoid running multiple appliances simultaneously.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the right solar generator is essential for your RV journey. From your morning coffee to a cozy night of sleep with the AC on, a proper generator is a must-have when you don’t have shore power.
Dabbsson DBS3500 offers a portable shore power experience that greatly complements 30A RVs and many more outdoor experiences. Your generator is an investment in your power independence. Choose wisely and enjoy the full benefits of your RV lifestyle without compromise.

But before you go car camping, you need to make sure that you have the right gear so that you can truly enjoy the experience. That’s why we’ve put together this comprehensive list of car camping essentials.
Keep reading to learn everything that you need to bring with you to get the most out of your car camping adventure.
The car camping basics
People use the phrase ‘car camping’ to mean two different things. It can mean driving to a camping spot and literally sleeping in your car instead of setting up a tent. But it can also just mean putting all your gear into a car, driving it to a camping spot, and then sleeping outside of it in a tent.
Both types of car camping can be fun experiences. So don’t hesitate to try each version out to see which one you like best.
Why go car camping?
Today, we’re all so busy and reliant upon electronics to get through the day. This can make it tough to stay grounded and feel connected to both the people you love and yourself.
Car camping is the perfect break from modern society. It gets you out of your routine and into nature. Studies show that spending time in nature can reduce stress, anger, fear. It can also help to reduce your blood pressure, improve your heart rate, and relax the tension in your muscles.
What do you need for car camping?
You may put off car camping because you think you need to purchase a ton of new gear to do it. If that sounds like you, don’t let that convince you not to go. The truth is, you can enjoy car camping with fewer items than you think. Check out our camping essentials list to learn more.

It’s also a good idea to keep the following things in mind:
Go off the beaten path
Campsites can be super enjoyable places to spend a few days with your friends and family. But if you’re looking for an adventure, consider going off the beaten path and picking a camping spot that isn’t a tourist destination.
This is much easier to do if you plan to camp inside your car anyway. If you don’t need to set up a tent, you can essentially go camp wherever you want. That opens up a world of possibilities for your trip and could lead to a number of unexpected benefits.
Pro tip:
Now before traveling far in your car, check out our complete list of things to do on a road trip to help pass the time.
Carry jumper cables
If you plan on going car camping, then you may end up using your car’s battery quite a bit throughout your trip. This makes it easy to accidentally overuse the battery and it become too low to start your vehicle. Carrying jumper cables gives you a way to fix this problem if it happens to you.
Be mindful of how you store your food
If you don’t store your food properly, then you could end up with a very stinky car or even unwanted wildlife in your campsite. So, make sure that you have a good plan for storing food before you go and stick to it once you get there.
Be flexible
Finally, any discussion of must-haves for car camping should include a good attitude. Camping is all about getting outside your comfort zone and enjoying a part of the world that you don’t see every day.
Things won’t always go according to plan, and that’s okay. Being flexible and open to the unexpected can help you enjoy your camping experience even more.
Dabbsson keeps your gear charged while you camp
One of the biggest keys to fully enjoying your next car camping experience is ensuring that you have a portable source of power for your most important devices. But traditional generators are noisy, costly, and take expensive fuel to run.

The Different Types of Home Generators
When choosing a home generator, it's essential to compare similar options. Some generators can power your entire home, while others only provide enough output for critical appliances and personal electronics. Home backup power generators vary in capabilities and limitations based on their fuel source and other factors. Here's a breakdown of the basic types of home backup power generators.
Portable Generators
Traditional portable generators are smaller units that you can store discreetly and bring out during an outage. They typically power essential appliances rather than the entire house and run on fossil fuels like propane, diesel, gasoline, or natural gas. The main downside is that they’re noisy and produce toxic emissions like carbon monoxide. You can’t operate them indoors, and they require a constant fuel supply.
Off-Grid Solar Generators
Solar generators are a modern alternative that doesn’t require fossil fuel, are safe to operate indoors, and are virtually silent. They capture sunlight with PV modules like solar panels and convert it to electricity using the photovoltaic effect. Solar panels need a portable power station or other balance of system to convert and store the electricity produced.
Portable Power Stations
A portable power station is essentially a large battery that stores electricity for later use. While it can’t generate power independently, it’s useful for storing backup energy for emergency outages. Brands like Dabbsson offer portable power stations that can be charged with solar panels, creating a solar generator. You can also recharge them using AC electricity, a car adapter, or USB-C. Charging with solar panels is slower than a wall plug but results in a clean, renewable energy source.
Hybrid Solar Generators
Hybrid solar generators combine solar power and battery storage, offering the benefits of both off-grid independence and on-grid convenience. Systems like the Dabbsson Power Stations provide multiple charging options, including AC grid power and DC car adapters, and can function independently of the grid as long as there is sufficient sunlight. They save money and keep your home running during extended power outages.
What to Consider When Comparing Home Generators
Choosing the right generator for your home requires careful consideration of several crucial factors. Here’s what you need to keep in mind before making your backup power investment:
Power Requirements
Start by determining how much power you need during an extended blackout. For a few appliances and personal devices like smartphones and laptops, a small generator may suffice. However, to keep your entire house running as usual, you'll need a high-capacity battery backup solution or a standby generator.
Size
Opt for the smallest generator that meets your needs. A compact unit is typically the best choice for home backup requirements, as it’s easier to store and access quickly during a power outage. Portable generators are also great for off-grid applications like camping and RV life. If you spend significant time in a van or RV, compact off-grid power solutions like Dabbsson Power Station are ideal.
Reliability
Your backup power source needs to be reliable when a blackout hits. If possible, invest in a generator that kicks in automatically or at least one that’s easy to activate without fumbling in the dark. The best option is a generator that integrates with your home’s electrical circuits for seamless power transition.
Noise Levels
Consider the noise level of the generator. Fossil fuel generators are typically very noisy, while battery backups and solar generators operate almost silently. Both you and your neighbors will appreciate a quieter option.
Fuel Source
Fuel availability and storage are important considerations. Gasoline has a short shelf life and can be expensive, whereas propane is a more stable and economical option. Units connected to your home’s natural gas line can activate seamlessly during an outage, but this may increase your energy bill. Solar power and battery backups are cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternatives.
Environmental Impact and Safety
Traditional generators burn fossil fuels and release harmful emissions like carbon monoxide and greenhouse gases. These emissions can be dangerous to your health and the environment. Using clean, renewable solar power will keep your family safe from toxic emissions and reduce your carbon footprint.
Warranties
A backup power generator is a significant investment, so look for a warranty that offers long-term protection. Choose a brand or manufacturer known for the durability and reliability of its products to ensure peace of mind.
By carefully considering these factors, you can make an informed decision and choose the best generator for your home’s needs.
Final Thoughts
Purchasing and installing a home generator is the best way to prepare for inevitable utility grid failures. Investing in energy security is essential for your family's safety, but it's not a cheap endeavor. Carefully calculate your electricity needs and consider the impact of a home generator like the Dabbsson DBS3500 on your budget, your family’s health, and the environment. Dabbsson offers solar generators for every home and using case.

That’s where this blog comes in. We’re here to help you understand your purchase by giving you the best tips for using solar panels.
Read on to explore how to properly use portable solar panels so that you can maximize their efficiency. You’ll learn top tips from our Dabbsson experts and understand what makes solar panels for home work and how to deal with cloudy weather.
Top Tips to Find the Best Sunlight Location
Calculate the best sunlight location for your portable solar panel - particularly if you’re camping and relying on it to supply your electricity.
Consider the intensity of the sunlight. It’s better to place the panel in direct sunlight rather than shade - and ideally in a place that isn’t likely to be shaded later in the day (you might need to move your portable solar panel around during the day if you’re in a wooded area).
Think about the angle of the light. Calculate the best tilt angle for your solar panel by establishing the daily solar insolation value for your location (a measurement of average daily solar radiation). This value will change based on your location and the time of year. You can find free tools on the internet to calculate your latitude and the daily solar insolation value.
Understand the length of daylight hours in your area. Make sure your panel faces true south in the northern hemisphere and true north in the Southern hemisphere so it can receive sunlight all day.
Establish which time of the day is the best to put your portable solar panel out - the intensity and time will change seasonally, so it’s good to check this regularly.
Be warned: your solar panel can experience overexposure to sunlight due to reflections from nearby buildings or bodies of water.
Maximize your chances of capturing sunlight by purchasing a solar panel with a greater surface area and a high wattage. The Dabbsson DBS420S, for instance, expands to 23.2283*36.6142*1.9685 inches (590*930*50mm) and has a peak power of 420W, meaning that when positioned correctly, it can provide a large amount of juice to your electrical devices.
Connecting Devices
It’s important to correctly connect devices to your solar panel to prevent surges and shocks. Key things to remember: making sure that your solar panel is compatible with your device by only using the cables and connectors provided by the manufacturer, only connecting as many devices as your solar panel can handle to prevent overloading, and making sure your portable solar panel is in a well-ventilated area to stop overheating.
Remember that the voltage output of your solar panel should match the voltage input of your charger or power bank. User manuals or product specifications on websites will help you to understand this.
Protective Measures
You can take specific measures to maximize the durability of any solar panels for your home.
1) Waterproofing and Weatherproofing
In areas that experience rain and hail, invest in flexible solar panels with tempered glass. Ideally, search for an A-grade 182-10BB mono-crystalline layer that can cope well with high pressure - giving 3500MPa (megapascal, a unit of pressure - in comparison, standard PVC solar panels are 62MPa). This protective layer is also great for protecting your portable solar panel when you travel with it. For waterproofing, you need a solar panel with a minimum IP65 rating. We wrote more about the IP ratings of our latest solar panels in this blog so you can learn more and compare.
2) Surge Protection and Grounding
When you have electrical products outdoors, you must protect them from surges (for instance, when lightning strikes happen) and ground them. Surge protection prevents damage to the solar panel system and grounding helps to dissipate any electrical charge to minimize the risk of electrical shock or fire.
3) Keep Clean and Clear
It’s important to clean your solar panel regularly. If you have a solar panel for your home that has a minimum IP65 rating (see above; Dabbsson portable solar panels like the DBS210S are precision built with an IP65 rating) then you can use water, a gentle cloth and a non-abrasive cleaning fluid to get rid of any dirt and stains. Something that might slip your mind is clearing vegetation around your panel. Not only can leaves drop onto the solar panel, but the shrubbery itself can block sunlight.
4) Insurance and Warranty
Check that your home insurance covers any portable solar panels you buy for your home in case of fire at your property or theft. If you buy solar panels for camping, you should also check these are covered whilst you travel. For mechanical issues, be aware of your warranty processes and what is covered.
Note: Dabbsson offers up to 24 months warranty on every portable solar panel purchase (12 months upfront, extended warranty of an additional 12 months with registration).
Preparation Before Use
Prepare your solar panel before and after you use it.
Ensure the panel is clean and in the correct position to maximize exposure to sunlight (see above for how to find this). Moreover, check all the connectors and cables to make sure they are safe if you've not used the solar panel in several weeks or months. No wires should be exposed and every cable should connect snugly to any battery power stations you use.
If you find any issues, store the panel safely and contact the manufacturer.
Storage and Maintenance
It is crucial to store portable solar panels correctly at home and on camping trips. You should also maintain the solar panel, as this will extend its life and help maximize its efficiency. If you don't clean your solar panel regularly, you will see reduced efficiency and potential degradation of its materials.
The great news is that your approach to looking after your solar panel can be flexible. You can maintain them at the same time as storing them correctly. For instance, you should clean your solar panel before storing it, making sure to check for any external damage as you do so.
And while you should invest in a solar panel that is high quality - with integrally formed carbon brazing materials and a mono-crystalline layer - it’s also important to remember to store it out of direct sunlight in a cool, dry place. Excessive exposure to high temperatures and sunlight naturally degrades materials. So, you shouldn't keep a portable solar panel outside year-round. Secure storage also keeps your solar panel safe from theft.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do portable solar panels work?
Scientists have been working on solar panels since the 1800s when French physicist Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel discovered the photovoltaic effect with materials that produce an electric current when exposed to sunlight. In scientific terms, the semiconductors in solar panels absorb photos and release electrons, which generate an electrical current.
This means that all solar panels use the photovoltaic effect to convert the sun’s power into electricity, which you can store to power whole homes and your devices when camping.
How to deal with cloudy weather
Cloudy weather can reduce the amount of electricity that your solar panel generates. Of course, you can’t control the weather. However, you can minimize how it impacts your clean solar panel in many ways:
Purchase high-quality portable solar panels with excellent cell efficiency (how well your solar panel converts the energy from sunlight into electricity - at 23.4%, Dabbsson portable solar panels rate at the most efficient end of the scale)
Add another panel to your system and keep them clean and well-maintained
Connect any portable solar panels for your home to battery storage so you can make the most of sunny days and conserve the energy generated
Make sure your solar panel is in the optimum position for sunlight, including their tilt angle - this may change through the year, so it's good to know the weather and seasonal patterns
Use portable solar panels so you can more easily move them around and make the most of available sunlight
How to tell if your solar panel is damaged
The easiest way to tell if your flexible solar panel is damaged is to look at it! Do you see any cracks or breaks? Is there any ingrained dirt or debris? Are there any water stains or condensation under the glass? Any of these can indicate damage.
Your solar panel might also have an accompanying app, which can provide feedback and data about the status. If you discover any anomalies, contact your supplier and use your warranty.

Understanding Solar Panel Specifications
If you’re unsure about what any of the above specifications mean, don’t worry. Use our handy guide below to understand the different elements of choosing a flexible solar panel.
Maximum Wattage: This refers to how much electrical output is produced by the solar panels when tested. The higher the wattage, the more electricity can be produced over a set timeframe (e.g. the 420W can produce double the amount of electricity than the 210W model over the same timeframe).
Maximum Operating Voltage: This is the maximum voltage at which your panel can operate - vital to know if you’re connecting additional components to ensure that no damage is caused.
Maximum Operating Current: This is the maximum current that is produced when there is higher output. The higher this number, the higher the efficiency of the solar panel (because amps x voltage = watts).
Open Circuit Voltage (Voc): The maximum voltage when there’s no current flowing through the portable solar panel - when it’s exposed to sunlight but there is no load connected. Knowing this helps you to calculate the maximum power point of the panel as well as other important safety factors, to understand the panel’s overall performance.
Time Taken to Charge 500W Generator: If you’re connecting your portable solar panel to a solar generator, it’s important to know how long it will take to charge to make the most of the available sunlight. This is a good way to compare power versus cost - the panels that charge the quickest will likely also cost more.
Working Temperature: Your solar panel needs to be able to operate in extremes of temperature. Use this specification to understand if the solar panel is capable of working even on the hottest of days.
IP Rating: IP, or Ingress Protection, ratings demonstrate how protected your device is from water and dust. As the official site notes, “the first numeral refers to the protection against solid objects and is rated on a scale from 0 (no protection) to 6 (no ingress of dust). The second numeral rates the enclosure’s protection against liquids and uses a scale from 0 (no protection) to 9 (high-pressure hot water from different angles).” Our panels are IP65, meaning that they are dust-tight and protected from water jets from any direction, and IP67, meaning dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion in water.
Cell Efficiency: This refers to how well your solar panel converts the energy from sunlight into electricity. This rating puts our technology at the most efficient end of the scale (regular monocrystalline panels have efficiency rates of 15-25%).

Unleashing Freedom and Convenience: Why You Should Have a Solar Power Generator
Having extra energy throughout the day, usually fueled by coffee, is vital for completing important tasks. But in today’s age, extra and reliable energy sources for your devices is equally as important. Venturing outdoors on extraordinary road trips, hikes, mountain climbing, or trying to endure a home blackout emergency means a lack of needed power is sometimes inevitable. Gas-powered generators have been around for years, but are often costly, loud, and bulky.
However, with the emergence of solar generators, this is an issue you can finally say goodbye to. Solar generators are a reliable, portable, and safe energy source, whether you need to power the lights during a home emergency or want to ensure you have enough battery during your next camping trip.
Below, you’ll learn everything you need to know about solar power generators as well as why you need to add a Dabbsson model to your next shopping list.
What is a solar powered generator?
To put it simply, a solar generator is a powerful, fully functional system that runs on solar power, utilizing solar panels instead of fossil fuels to produce electricity. However, the most essential feature of any solar powered generator is its ability to serve as power backup, especially during emergencies.
But why should this matter to you?
Imagine this. You’re at home enjoying your favorite comedy film with family or friends. The positive vibes are flowing, and so are the laughs. Suddenly, the lights go out, the house becomes eerily still, and you find yourself staring at a dark TV screen. You peek out the window and are greeted by an even darker street.
Yes, it’s a power outage. One that you couldn’t have possibly prepared for.
Even when traveling outdoors, emergencies sometimes arise. You’re RVing across the country with your family, but without a reliable solar powered generator, you won’t be able to power your phones, lights, appliances, and more when you need them. For most RVs, having a generator is an absolute must.
Thankfully, solar powered generators don’t require fuel or gas to produce the electricity you need, regardless if you’re stuck at home with no power or need a backup when adventuring outdoors.
So, how do solar powered generators work?
Essentially, there are four major components of most solar generators:
Inverter
Battery
Control system
Portable solar panels
Sunlight is converted into direct current (DC) after being absorbed by the solar panels. This is then channeled through the control system, which allows solar power to be stored in the battery connected to the power station. When it comes time to actually use the power stored in the battery, an inverter is what you need. Inverters and the control system convert electricity into AC and DC power, allowing you to charge and power appliances, laptops, and other devices via USB ports, AC outlets, or car cigarette lighter port.
6 reasons why you should have a solar power generator
Low noise, even lower pollution
Most gas generators have high noise levels between 70-80dB, equivalent to the sound of a dishwasher or kitchen blender. Solar generators like the Dabbsson DBS2300, feature library quiet noise levels. Therefore, you never need to worry about a continuous machine rattle while you try to relax, work, or have fun with friends and family. Moreover, solar panel generators do not burn fuel, eliminating the emission of harmful pollutants and providing a clean energy source.
2. Portable power for outdoor adventures
Easily enliven your RV living during cross-country road trips by ensuring you have a reliable power backup option. Phones die, laptops run out of power, and emergencies occur when outdoors. Be prepared with the power you need, whether you’re on the beach, in the mountains, or even in the backyard.
3. Keep your home powered during emergencies
Simply put, rolling blackouts happen. And depending on where you live in the world, they occur more often than not. Sometimes powerlines go down during storms, sometimes, high-energy demands in an area affect power production. With a home battery backup, you can keep home appliances, computers, phones, and more charged or functioning. There should be no debate; ensure you have the power necessary to keep your family safe and comfortable at all times.
4. Save money with lower maintenance costs
Expensive maintenance costs will leave you wondering if you made the right purchase. With Portable solar power generators, you’ll pay significantly less in the long term for maintenance and repairs compared to gas generators. Moreover, the power you use is free. The key word in solar powered generators is “solar”, meaning electricity comes from the sun and not costly gas or oil options. Power up your devices and appliances fast and efficiently while reducing expenses.
5. Easy to operate
Solar powered generators do not require fuel or oil to produce the power you need. And that’s their major advantage. Never fret about pouring gas, perhaps accidentally spilling it, or having to refuel the tank. Just turn on your solar generator, connect your devices, and go back to enjoying your life.
6. Perfect for those wanting to be more eco-friendly
No fuel, no gas, and little maintenance all mean fewer pollutants. So not only will you obtain the power you need anywhere, anytime, but you’ll also be doing your part to minimize your carbon footprint.
How do I choose the right solar powered generator?
There are several key factors you should always keep in mind when shopping for a solar generator that best suits you. Better yet, ask yourself or a sales rep these questions before making a purchase:
1. How much electricity does this model provide?
Obviously, you want a solar panel generator that is going to provide power for as long as possible. This is usually measured in watt hours (Wh). Higher wattage equals more power. For instance, with the Dabbsson DBS2300, you get 2330Wh total capacity and 2200W total output via 15 ports. Power your home appliances, smart devices, and more, fast and conveniently.
2. How long does this model take to recharge?
A high-capacity battery is needed to charge or power your devices fully. So, choose a model that doesn’t take long to recharge after use. 2-12 hours is a great bet, but ensure that there are multiple options to recharge, including a separate generator, AC outlet, car charger, and of course, solar panel.
3. What is included in the warranty?
Product warranties can be fantastic, especially for the more expensive devices. Carefully consider the benefits of the device you purchase, which will vary from company to company. Top companies like Dabbsson are more likely to provide perks like a money-back guarantee, refunds, and more so that you can use your solar powered generator worry-free.
4. What features are included with this model?
As you learned above, solar generators are versatile devices that can supply power to a multitude of devices. This is only possible with the ports necessary, like USB, AC, and car cigarette lighter port. If you want your laptop, coffee pot, or microwave powered, this is essential.
5. Is portability important?
For those awaiting their next outdoor adventure but worried about power sources, then ensure your solar generator is easy to transport from one location to the next. A solar generator that’s too heavy or takes too long to set up is not ideal. Keep the weight around 25kg, capable of being handled and operated by one person.
